Defence Secretary Fears Polls Indicate A Landslide Victory For Labour

Why Labour could win huge majority at next election, warns Grant Shapps

Defence Secretary fears polls indicate a landslide victory for Labour

Grant Shapps has warned the public not to allow Labour the chance to win an overwhelming majority at the next general election, amid concerns over the party's alleged links to extremism. Speaking to Times Radio, the defence secretary said the sort of landslide majority many current polls indicate could be a "real problem for our democracy".

Mr Shapps is the latest in a series of senior Tory figures to express concerns about the prospect of a Labour super majority. In his first major speech on defense, he warned that a new "axis of tyranny" is working to undermine our freedoms.

He said: "We need to be prepared for war. We need to be prepared to fight for our values. This is a real problem for our democracy. We have to make sure we are doing everything we can to protect it."

Mr Shapps's comments come as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn faces increasing pressure to take action against members of his party who have been accused of anti-semitism. Mr Shapps said: "We have to make sure that our democracy is not undermined by those who would seek to destroy it. We have to make sure that our values are protected. We have to make sure that our freedoms are protected."
