Early Life and Activism
Angela Yvonne Davis, born January 26, 1944, is an American Marxist and feminist political activist, philosopher, academic, and author. She rose to prominence in the early 1970s due to her involvement in a politically charged murder case.
Political Activism
Davis became a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Panther Party. In 1970, she was arrested and accused of being complicit in a murder during a courthouse escape attempt. Although acquitted, her case drew international attention and solidified her reputation as a radical activist.
Academic and Literary Career
After her trial, Davis pursued an academic career, earning a PhD in philosophy. She has written extensively on race, gender, and social justice, including her influential book, "Women, Race, and Class."
Continued Activism
Despite decades of activism, Davis remains a vocal advocate for the oppressed. She continues to write, speak, and participate in social movements, addressing issues such as mass incarceration, police brutality, and the rights of women and People of Color.
