Australian Receives Warm Welcome On Return To Augusta Despite Defection To Saudi Backed Series

Cameron Smith makes Masters debut after LIV Golf switch

Australian receives warm welcome on return to Augusta despite defection to Saudi-backed series

Open champion says important for LIV golfers to play well to prove worth on PGA Tour

Cameron Smith is making his eighth Masters appearance this week, having finished in the top 10 in four of the past six years at Augusta National. The Australian received a warm welcome on his return to the tournament despite his defection to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series last year.

Smith was given the all-clear to play in the Masters in 2023 after Augusta National Golf Club decided not to ban players who had joined LIV Golf. The Open champion said it was important for LIV golfers to play well at the Masters to prove their worth on the PGA Tour.

"I think it's important for us to play well here and show that we can still compete at the highest level," Smith said. "There's a lot of talk about LIV Golf and whether or not we're good enough to play on the PGA Tour. I think we can prove that we are by playing well at the Masters."
