Young Forward Joins NBA Team After Successful College Career
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (October 18, 2023) - The Memphis Grizzlies have signed forward David Johnson to a one-year contract worth $1,801,769, the team announced today.
Johnson, a 6-foot-8 forward from Roy, Utah, joins the Grizzlies after a successful collegiate career at the University of Utah. In his senior season with the Utes, he averaged 14.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range.
Johnson was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and was an honorable mention All-American in 2023. He was also voted the Utah Male College Athlete of the Year. Johnson is expected to provide depth and athleticism to the Grizzlies' frontline rotation.
"David is a young, talented player who we believe can contribute to our team right away," Grizzlies General Manager Zach Kleiman said. "He's a versatile forward who can score, rebound, and defend. We're excited to add him to our roster."
Johnson becomes the first official signing by the Grizzlies since the start of free agency on July 1. The team had previously waived Darius Jones and Xavier Tillman to clear roster space for Johnson.
